I am so frigging proud and happy for Meryl Streep's Oscar win last night. While she may be the most nominated actor in history, she has only won three statuettes. The last one was 29 years ago, making last night her only win in my lifetime. While a tie with Viola Davis would have been spectacular, I am just elated right now. Meryl's portrayal of Margaret Thatcher was phenomenal, and she has deserved another win for a long time.
That's really the only comment I have on the awards, as this upset at the end of the night had me floored.

The actress that lays a golden egg every frickin' time.
Right now I'm totally loving the attention being lavished on Meryl Streep. From the fabulous NY Times article about the "cinematic chameleon" to an MSN rundown of the Oscars that Streep should have won, I feel like homegirl is finally getting the accolades she deserves.
What is that? Accolades? As if the sixteen Oscar nominations were not enough! I mean, blah blah blah. "It's such an honor to be nominated." That's bull. Meryl is the losingest actor in Oscar history. She deserves a special award just for being her spectacular self. With the roles she's had in the last few years, starting with The Devil Wears Prada, it feels like people are really starting to take notice of her all over again. She's become a major box office draw (thanks Mamma Mia!) and has been on the cover of countless magazines, getting discovered by a whole new, younger audience. I think it's great, especially at her age. Meryl seems so comfortable in her own skin, in a way that she didn't before. She seems freer, more approachable, and very lithe. Her fabulous cheekbones have always been one of her greatest physical attributes, but now her face appears softer, her eyes more dazzling.
So, thank you New York Times for saying what so many of us feel: give Streep another damn Oscar!
And while I appreciate the gesture, MSN Movies, I don't appreciate you calling the film that housed my favorite Streep performance "predictable" or any of her work "treacle". How dare you, sir! And her Devil Wears Prada performance not Oscar-worthy? Shame on you!
Okay, I'm done worshipping Meryl Streep for the day.

Pass the merlot.
Not having cable limits my blog writing considerably. I love giving my opinion/analysis of shows/movies, so the fact that I see so few new ones limits the things I can talk about here. I did see It's Complicated recently, which I thought was a great romantic comedy no matter what your age is. It's ultimately about how sometimes we let what's comfortable override what's right, and the mess that can get one into. Meryl Streep's character seemed very much like what I imagine Meryl to be like in real life: put together, yet slightly ditsy, with an effortless sex appeal. Whereas many actors become caricatures of themselves as they grow older (I'm talking to you, Nicholson), Meryl just grows more intricate and layered. In her younger years, people were overwhelmed by her talent for accents specifically, and how she could play any nationality with ease. But now she seems more relaxed and natural in her portrayals, making her more relatable. I personally think that women are like fine wines. If allowed to age properly, they can become more robust and fulfilling. I suppose I say this partially because, as I get older, the women I admire get older as well, and aging with them rather than looking back on their progression gives me a greater appreciation of who they are.
Now, speaking of fine wines, that George Clooney...yum. I read on Perez Hilton today that George's girlfriend wants to have his baby. For whatever reason, perhaps because she looks like a hag, I thought she was about ten years older than she actually is. So, as I was about to comment how some dried-up uterus didn't deserve to attempt to carry his child, I had to stop myself. She's only 32, so her uterus is probably in about as good of shape as mine. I still think I'm more suited to carry his child, but that's probably just because I have a greater appreciation for the Clooney dynasty whereas she likely just wants to milk him for some child support. Oh well. I don't think I'm his type anyway.

Wilkommen
Alright, so this is my first official blog post, outside of LiveJournal anyway. I have been a devoted LiveJournalee for over three years now, but in hopes of expanding my blog audience, I thought I'd try a new venue. For those of you who aren't familiar with my ingenius LiveJournal, my name is Lora. I just graduated from college in May and I am obsessed with Bette Midler. Anything else that you need to know about me will come with time.
I had today off from work and decided to make it my bi-monthly cleaning day before I head out to spend Christmas with my family. Other than a few straggling dishes in the sink, the place looks pretty good. The fact that I did clean today makes me feel much better. Other than that, it was really a wasted day. I watched the movie Mamma Mia! three times within a 24 hour time period, and now I'm listening to Def Leppard. Oh god. What is wrong with me?
